The distance is about 90 km and the drive takes around 2 hours. The first ~75 km to Kalavryta town take ~1.5 hours, via Aigio/Diakopto. From there, another ~14 km of mountain road climb to the ski centre at Vathia Lakka on Mount Helmos.

How to plan the day
Lifts run from the morning until early afternoon, so the day starts early. A schedule that works comfortably:
- ~07:30 leave Patras
- ~09:30 arrive at the slopes, before the lift queues build
- ~16:00 leave the ski centre, with a stop in Kalavryta for food if you like
- ~18:00 back in Patras
Lift passes are sold at the ski centre. Equipment rental (skis, snowboards, boots) is available both at the ski centre and in Kalavryta town.
Tip: Rental shops in Kalavryta town are usually a little cheaper, and on busy days you skip the queue at the base. Rent on your way up in the morning, try the boots on without rushing and drop everything off on the way back. It is worth comparing prices before you decide.
Options: how to get there
By car
It gives you flexibility, but the last mountain stretch needs snow chains on cold days and the ski centre car park fills up at weekends and on holidays. See the Patras car rental guide.
The rack railway
The rack railway runs from Diakopto to Kalavryta town, not to the slopes. For the last ~14 km you need a taxi or another ride, so it suits those who want the train experience.
Return transfer
A pre-booked Scoot Transfer picks you up at your door in Patras in the morning, drops you at the ski centre and collects you at the return time you set. No snow driving, no chains and no parking. Online you book two rides, there and back, or by phone on +30 2610 331 000.

For bigger groups
A group of up to 8 people goes up in one minivan, all together and with their gear, instead of two cars. For 1 to 4 people a sedan is enough. When you book, say how many ski or snowboard sets you have so a vehicle with the right space comes.
Weather and the road
The road from Kalavryta up to the ski centre closes for a while when there is ice or heavy snow, and chains are often mandatory. Before you set off, check the ski centre's announcements for open slopes and lifts, and the state of the road.
When the ski centre opens
The season usually starts in December and runs to March or April, depending on snow. Weekends, Christmas, Epiphany and Carnival are the busiest days, so it is best to book your transfer early.
